- unsweetened cocoa powder1/3 cup
- baking powder1 teaspoon
- salt1/4 teaspoon
- sugar3/4 cup
- egg1 large
- milk1/2 cup
- melted butter1/4 cup

- pitted cherries, halved1 1/2 cups
Method

- 2Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt in one bowl.
- 3In another bowl, whisk the sugar, egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
- 4Stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture just until combined.
- 5Fold in most of the cherries and spread the batter in the pan, then scatter the remaining cherries on top.
- 6Bake for 24 to 28 minutes until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs, then cool before cutting into squares.
Tips
- Do not overmix the batter or the cake can turn dense.
- If using very juicy cherries, pat them dry first so the batter stays balanced.
- These squares taste even better after fully cooling because the crumb sets nicely.
