Method

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F and line an 8-inch cake pan with parchment.
  2. 2Whisk the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in one bowl.
  3. 3In another bowl, mix the brown sugar, buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.
  4. 4Combine the wet and dry ingredients just until smooth, then pour into the pan.
  5. 5Slice the pears thinly and toss them with cinnamon and powdered sugar.
  6. 6Arrange the pear slices over the batter in a loose fan pattern.
