Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour2 cups
  • instant yeast2 1/4 teaspoons
  • warm milk3/4 cup
  • granulated sugar2 tablespoons
  • salt1/2 teaspoon
  • unsalted butter, softened3 tablespoons
  • cream cheese, softened6 ounces
  • lemon zest1 teaspoon
  • mixed fresh berries, chopped1 1/2 cups
  • egg, beaten1
  • powdered sugar1/3 cup

Method

  1. 1In a bowl, mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt, then stir in warm milk and softened butter until a soft dough forms.
  2. 2Knead briefly until smooth, cover, and rest for 15 minutes while you make the filling.
  3. 3Blend cream cheese with lemon zest until creamy, then fold in the chopped berries carefully.
  4. 4Roll the dough into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface and spread the filling down the center third.
  5. 5Cut diagonal strips along both sides, then fold them over the filling in a braid pattern and transfer to a lined baking sheet.
  6. 6Brush with beaten egg and bake at 375°F for 22–25 minutes until deep golden and set.
  7. 7Whisk powdered sugar with 1 to 2 teaspoons of water to make a drizzle, then let the braid cool slightly and finish with glaze.

Tips

  • Use berries that are dry and not overly juicy so the braid bakes up neatly.
  • For a sweeter brunch, add an extra tablespoon of sugar to the filling.
  • Serve warm with tea or coffee to make the flavors feel especially festive.
