Method

  1. 1Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a tray.
  2. 2Combine flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and smoked paprika, then cut in the cold butter until pea-sized pieces remain.
  3. 3Stir in cheddar and chives, then add buttermilk to form a shaggy dough.
  4. 4Roll the dough into a rectangle, fold it loosely, and roll again to encourage flaky spirals.
  5. 5Cut into thick strips, twist each strip, brush with beaten egg, and scatter sesame seeds over the top.
