Ways to earn without ads

1. Freemium + Play Billing subscriptions

Keep scanning, pantry and recipes free. Charge for Pro perks (unlimited scans, family sync, meal plans). Use Google Play Billing Library — Play takes 15% up to $1M/yr revenue, 30% above.

2. One-time unlocks & lifetime pass

Users who dislike subscriptions can pay once for a Lifetime Pro (e.g. $49). Great trust signal, still uses Google Play Billing.

3. Optional donations

Add a 'Buy me a coffee' or Ko-fi/Patreon link outside the app store; Google's policy forbids donation prompts inside apps unless via billing.

4. Affiliate & partnerships (ethical)

Non-intrusive affiliate links to grocery flyer apps (Flipp, Reebee) or eco-brands. Optional recipe kits partnership. Never sell user data.

5. B2B licensing

License the identify + food-waste analytics to grocery chains, schools, hotels. Highest ARPU, no consumer friction.

Google Play launch checklist

  1. Wrap this web app with TWA (Trusted Web Activity) using Bubblewrap or PWABuilder — ships as a real APK/AAB.
  2. Enrol in the Google Play Console ($25 one-time).
  3. Create a Play Merchant account to receive payouts.
  4. Set up Subscriptions (monthly + yearly) and a one-time Lifetime product in Play Console.
  5. Integrate Google Play Billing Library v7+ and verify purchases server-side via the Real-time Developer Notifications (RTDN) webhook.
  6. Publish a clear privacy policy and complete the Data safety form (no ads, no tracking = major trust boost).
  7. Localize the Play Store listing in EN / FR / ES / PT / AR to match the in-app languages.
  8. Roll out via Internal → Closed → Open testing before Production.

Once you're ready to wire real billing, replace the usePro() local flag with a server-verified entitlement powered by Play Billing + RTDN.
