How long do spinach and salad greens last?

Loose leafy greens keep 3–7 days refrigerated; pre-washed bagged salad is closer to 3–5 days. Cooked greens freeze for 10–12 months after blanching.

A few hours only — they wilt fast

Store it right

  • Line the container with a dry paper towel to absorb condensation.
  • Wash only right before eating unless the bag says pre-washed.
  • Store away from apples and bananas, which release ripening ethylene.

Signs it has gone off

  • Slimy leaves
  • Dark, translucent patches
  • Sharp, sulphurous smell

Rescue ideas

  • Wilted greens are perfect in soups, curries, omelettes and pesto.
  • Blend into a green smoothie and freeze in cubes.
  • Crisp them up in ice water for 15 minutes before a salad.
